Maplewood Volunteer Receives Volunteer of the Year Award

Maplewood volunteer, Dick Tompkins, has been named Volunteer of the Year by the NYS Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and The NYS Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL). The award recognizes an outstanding volunteer serving in a skilled nursing facility.

Dick has been volunteering at The Maplewood for nearly 18 years, primarily in the Maintenance Department. A Kodak retiree, he has an extensive background in building operations and brings that knowledge and expertise as a volunteer. He works side by side with Maplewood’s maintenance crew on whatever projects come their way.

Did you ever wonder who is responsible for filling The Maplewood grounds with beautiful red geraniums and other summer plants? Dick takes charge of this project every year!

“I am thrilled that Dick is receiving this well-deserved recognition,” says Greg Chambery, Administrator. “From the very first day he volunteered, he has made a huge difference in what The Maplewood is able to achieve and he benefits our facility enormously.”

Many of us at The Maplewood see Dick as a father figure. He has a natural gift of being very approachable and always willing to help.

“I was surprised, honored and very pleased,” says Dick when asked about his thoughts on being Volunteer of the Year. “I like everyone I work with at The Maplewood – they are super people. I’m treated like part of the team and I enjoy the time I spend there.”

Congratulations Dick! Thank you for sharing your time and talent with us.
