Lakeview Floor Renovations

Change is good. Sometimes it creates a little dust here and there, but in the case of our Lakeview floor renovations, it’s well worth it. We’re committed to providing a nursing home experience in the greater Rochester area that is second to none, and this renovation is one example of that commitment.

Missing Blooms don’t Dampen Lilac Festival Spirit

Photo of Lilac Festival

Our two “invasions” of Highland Park for Rochester Lilac Festival 2012 held a somewhat disappointing, if not anticipated sight, for those enthusiasts that covet lilac blossoms. This year’s bizarre, upside-down weather with March’s warmth combined with April’s descent into chilly temperatures messed up nature’s cycle. In spite of the spent lilac bushes, both of The Maplewood’s tour groups soaked in sunshine, warm weather and an overall great experience!

Return to the Waterfront... Lighthouse Part Two

Photo of Charlotte Lighthouse

So it is in Rochester. After viewing the historic Charlotte Genesee Lighthouse from the toasty confines of The Maplewood’s bus in January, our plan was to return on May 17 for more thorough on-the-ground exploration. Fast-forward to that day: again on the bus, again pulled up near the structure, same lighthouse fanatics inside, plus Mary G’s niece Karen. I should have known better than to count on May. The outside temperature was 63 degrees, clouds ruled the sky, it had rained, and winds whipped out of the northwest at 17 miles per hour. Stay or go we had a decision to make! Would our efforts to explore the ground be thwarted by Mother Nature’s whim?

More Recognition for The Maplewood Website

Summit Creative Award logoWe were excited to learn this week of The Maplewood website's recognition in two categories of the 2012 Summit Creative Award® competition. The awards were won by our web design agency, Bob Wright Creative. Add this to our recent Best of the Web finalist selection, and I'd say we're on a bit of a roll!

A Championship Team, and How to Keep it Strong... Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

Last Thursday I was very fortunate to share a few hours with 75 incredibly important people at our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Their contribution is crucial to the quality of life at The Maplewood in which we take so much pride. The annual event was unbelievable.

A Playful Posse... Strong Museum Fun

It’s always nice when lots of family members join us for an outing. That’s exactly what happened on Wednesday, April 18 during a borderline raucous tour of the Strong Museum of Play. Mary G’s nieces, Cheryl and Karen, tagged along as did Elsie F’s daughter-in-law Brenda. I was delighted with their presence.

Great Day for Wine Tasting at Casa Larga

On a bright, crisp mid-April afternoon residents George C, Margaret M, along with volunteer Brenda Forman, Activities Assistant Sarah Hodges and myself boarded the van for a run south to Casa Larga Winery. Along with experiencing Turk Hill’s panoramic views of Fairport and beyond, the residents were geared up to sample a few different wines on this easygoing afternoon.

Team Maplewood Takes the Eat Well, Live Well Challenge

Eat Well Live Well logo (image source: EatWellLiveWell.org)Spring is here! What better time to re-focus on our personal health than right now? We encourage everyone to practice healthy living, and The Maplewood is going to do its part. On Sunday (April 15, 2012) we start this year's Eat Well, Live Well Challenge, the healthy living event first introduced by Wegmans in 2003.

Listening To Our Residents… Let’s Play Ball

Image of Baseball promotionIt started last season. A few residents, avid baseball fans, appreciated the number of games that The Maplewood’s satellite TV system televised. However, they wanted more. Let’s fast forward to this spring. Those same residents continued to advocate for more baseball while a few newer additions, including Yankees fan Joe T, wondered what we offered. He was in fact a little dismayed by the YES channel’s absence. These guys, and a few of our ladies, are serious baseball fans looking to watch games every day from April through October.

Administrator Greg Chambery understood this when he went to work on a baseball-friendly solution. To please our many Yankees fans, The Maplewood picked up that YES network. His next move, something for Mets fan Thorne W, was to add their cable network SNY. We still carry WGN, which means dozens of Chicago Cubs games for fans like resident Carmen E. The Fox Channel’s Saturday regional games of the week will still be available. Resident fans have the opportunity to watch at least one game every day from the opening pitch to the World Series.
