As I make my way through Danny’s and Happenings I see many new residents and family members who we hope will dine with us during this upcoming holiday season. So I thought it would be a good idea to mention the importance and ease of making a reservation for holiday meals, namely Thanksgiving and Christmas. One just needs to simply dial 585-872-1800 extension 4035. Reservations are on a first come, first served basis. Due to the overwhelming response to these meals we ask for parties of up to 5 guests per resident. We can accommodate larger parties at other times near the holidays – again just dial extension 4035 or visit our easy-to-use online dining reservation form.
Today, we introduce "Adil's Home Cooking" to our blog. This is where our Executive Chef Adil Culinovic will share some of his favorite seasonal recipes. We hope you give these delicious dishes a try!
One of the many nice things about working at The Maplewood is being able to team up with other professionals in the Rochester, NY area that are just as passionate about their work as we are about nursing home and rehabilitation care. Our telecommunications technology provider RelComm has produced a series of testimonial videos, and were kind enough to include The Maplewood.
In August The Maplewood welcomed two new LPNs to our nursing services staff, Christine Williams and James Keagle.
Christine is working three evening shifts, from 5pm to 9pm, on our Eastman nursing unit (3rd). James works three evening shifts as well, on our Lakeview nursing unit (2nd).
Thank you for helping to welcome Christine and James!
My idea for bringing scrapbooking to The Maplewood started small: what if we let every resident make a page about themselves and put them together in a book? It might make a fun craft to do one morning. Before you could say “acid free paper” or “scalloped-edged scissors” though, the idea had taken on a life of its own. A handful of crafty residents came to me full of enthusiasm and bursting with ideas. Many had years of scrapbooking behind them, and some were intrigued by this new art form and wanted to give it a try. They told me that if we did a scrapbook, they wanted this scrapbook to record their lives at The Maplewood. Not the way life here is portrayed and understood by others, but the way THEY experience life here. It needed to immortalize the things that were important to them—the things they did, things they looked forward to, and the people who helped and cared for them every day.
As our Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) for the past seven years, Patricia “Patti” Cataldi enjoys the variety that caring for our residents entails. Patti shares her enthusiasm too for being able to care for our residents on-site. “The services that I provide make it possible for our residents to have a professional dental cleaning and exam right here at The Maplewood, instead of traveling out of the building. I always make myself available in person or often on the phone if a family member has a question or concern. Occasionally a family member or friend will accompany their loved one to the appointment, which we fully encourage.”
My vision of water has always consisted of the pure, soft, Zen flow of life. Water symbolizes movement. Without movement life does not exist. Needless to say, water is extremely important to our well-being.
This past Summer The Maplewood was recognized by the Webster Chamber of Commerce with a Business Longevity Award. The award was given at a Chamber “Breakfast Before Business” session and is bestowed on Chamber members that have been in business for 25 years or more. At the event, which took place in the Knights of Columbus Center on Barrett Drive in Webster, The Maplewood received its award for achieving 65 years in business as a nursing home in the Rochester NY area. On-hand to accept the award plaque and certificate were Administrator Greg Chambery and Business Manager Laurie Zazzara. A number of other area businesses were recognized with this award as well for their decades of operation.
On this overcast, wet Rochester New York afternoon residents George C and Eileen D rolled a few over at Empire Lanes in Webster. George was amazed to have a chance to bowl in an actual bowling lane again. Both did very well. I thought about this particular trip and wondered a few things: How many more Empire Lanes outings will we schedule over the coming months? What trip’s overwhelming popularity will demand repeat scheduling? Times have really changed. But we're always ready.
